Christmas I Never Had

The word “family” dredges up memories and emotions. Oftentimes we can view family through the lenses of love and safety, and other times recall from the point of pain and frustration. Truth is, Families are as complicated as the individuals that make them up.

Point is — we make them

We mostly say nothing is more important than family. It is true that family stands to be the most important aspect of our lives and cradle of human civilization. Yet we often prioritize little time with our families as we should.

Two thousand and twenty has had more than enough holidays.

In Nigeria we had Covid and we beat it every time, then our youths woke up to stand for a common goal.

Covid took lives we cherished, ruined several properties and business that covered families. Struggling to recover, the protest displayed its feat of voiced pain, oppression and neglect.

We were forced to take a break twice. How did we spend those times with our families? Did we love during those times? Did we give during that period? Did we share?

We could argue that those periods wasn’t about them. That may sound noble. So I ask, When will it ever be?

We always have an opportunity with making things right with our families.

An average employed family man in Lagos spends 5–6 hours with his family.

An important reason why spending time with your family is essential is because tomorrow is never promised.

Holidays are not what makes families special, what we do with our families is what makes it special. So whether it’s Christmas or its new year, or its weekend, or weekday. Make it possible to spend time with family, build quality memories and dare to build special moments together.

You may choose not to do this for you, but then, do it for them, sometimes we ignore the devil in the details then bleed our hearts out when the devil strikes.

To you, family may not be a brother or a sister, a mum or a dad, Family is that person who is there for you when you need them, family is the one you share the love with when you couldn’t with anyone else, family is the on you share your wins with when there was no one better.

Family is I who saw you cry and never judged for the card you dealt.

Family are the ones who brings out the best and worst of us.

Remember — Families are the individuals that make them up.

Spend more time with them this holiday and every other day.

Lets Do Better…
