This is a song about somebody else

This is a song about somebody else
So don’t worry yourself, worry yourself…

First, he starts by easing himself into what seemingly appears to be a confession he clearly identifies with. However, he speaks about a reality external of himself.

The devil’s right there right there in the details
And you don’t wanna hurt yourself, hurt yourself.
Looking too closely… Looking too closely

He then uses a metaphor “the devil’s right there in the details” to draw the hearer’s attention to the evil one might find when you look too closely at your flaws. Subtle ways to revealing regrets, pain and hurt.

Put your arms around somebody else
Don’t punish yourself, punish yourself

There are a few things that presents a huge impact on life as we know it. Our accomplishments, our failures and shortcomings. Friendship and company makes all the difference. The Singer knows this, so he calls out his hearer to find that comfort over thinking on the hurt.

Truth is like blood underneath your fingernails
And you don’t wanna hurt yourself, hurt yourself

Ever done something you wish you never did, said something you wish you never said? This sort of feeling isn’t one that comes with a mere miscalculation or flaw. This type of emotional surge is mostly felt with indiscretions that could have been avoided, a very bad judgement call. The thought of it alone deepens the hurt not for the consequence of it but mostly for the oversight.

And I could be wrong about anybody else

So don’t kid yourself, kid yourself
It’s you right there, right there in the mirror
And you don’t wanna hurt yourself, hurt yourself
Looking too closely
And I could be wrong about anybody else

You often would not know others as well as you would know yourself.

So the singer makes this comparism to place further attention on the one feeling melancholic at which point, you would begin to wonder if this is the singer speaking to himself or trying to project his emotion to his hearer or both.

He points this out to show that he was staring at a image, a reflection being revealed in this mirror, a reflection of every wrong melancholy feeling that comes with regret.

LESSON LEARNT: You shouldn’t be taking too close a look at your imperfections, everyone has one or two or more, find comfort grace and strength in believing the best of your self.

This does not in a way carries a perfect interpretation to the song. It is only the writing of my emotion whilst listening to the beautiful music.
